P0ECF: Hybrid/EV Battery E Voltage High

P0ECF is stored when unit E of the hybrid/EV battery exceeds its upper voltage limit. It mirrors P0ECE, while unstable readings belong to P0ECD. No manufacturer documents P0ECF publicly. Ford's overcharge logic for its 2019 hybrids gives a sense of the limits involved: with the charge contactors open, a cell above 4.5 V on plug-in models or 4.35 V on full hybrids for 2 or 3 seconds counts as a fault under the state-of-charge code P0C30. Overvoltage in one unit typically follows broken cell balancing, a fault in charge or regeneration control, or a measuring channel that reads high. Because overcharged lithium cells are a safety risk, the controller blocks charging and regenerative braking and may open the contactors. Plug-in charging may be refused.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Charging or regenerative braking blocked
  • Battery warning, MIL
  • Vehicle may switch off the high-voltage system

Most likely causes

  • Cell balancing of unit E no longer works, group overcharged
  • Charge or regeneration control error
  • Voltage sense channel reading too high

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0ECF means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • E: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • CF: Specific fault in that system
