P0ED6: Generator Phase X Current High

P0ED6 is stored when the current in phase X of the hybrid generator exceeds its permitted limit. No manufacturer documents P0ED6 publicly. Ford gives figures for the comparable U, V and W codes P0A71, P0A74 and P0A77 on its 2019 power-split hybrids: the motor/generator control unit declares overcurrent once the generator current magnitude passes 300 A for 400 microseconds, or 15 A for 200 ms just after power-up, when practically no current should flow. Genuine overcurrent points to a winding short, damaged insulation or a power switch that fails closed; a current sensor with too much gain triggers a false alarm. The inverter shuts down to protect itself, so the hybrid system may stop working. Low side: P0ED5; general code: P0ED4.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the battery warning light comes on, you could get stranded. Turn off electrical accessories and go straight to a repair shop.

Symptoms

  • Sudden hybrid system shutdown or loss of ready mode
  • MIL and hybrid warning

Most likely causes

  • Turn-to-turn or ground short in the phase X winding
  • Inverter power switch failed closed
  • Current sensor reading too high (false overcurrent)

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0ED6 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • E: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • D6: Specific fault in that system
