P0ED5 means that phase X of the hybrid generator carries, or appears to carry, too little current while the generator is supposed to deliver torque. No manufacturer documents P0ED5 publicly. Mitsubishi publishes a comparable check for the U, V and W phases of the 2023 Outlander PHEV: with at least 50 A requested and the generator between 500 and 4,500 rpm, a phase current that stays within roughly 17 A of zero for 0.4 s sets P0E0C, as does a failed comparison with the target current. In phase X the same result comes from a broken phase cable, a burnt winding joint, an inverter switch that never conducts, or a current sensor stuck at its zero point. P0ED6 is the high case; the low codes of phases Y and Z are P0ED8 and P0EDB. Generator torque and charging suffer.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the battery warning light comes on, you could get stranded. Turn off electrical accessories and go straight to a repair shop.
Symptoms
- Weak or no battery charging by the generator
- Rough engine start or vibration from the generator
- MIL and hybrid warning
Most likely causes
- Open or loose phase X cable or terminal
- Inverter power switch for phase X not conducting
- Burnt or broken winding connection in the generator
- Current sensor stuck near zero
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0ED5 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- E: Subsystem depends on the code range
- D5: Specific fault in that system
