P0ED4 is the general current fault for phase X of the hybrid generator. J2012 names the generator phases U, V and W and adds a separate X, Y, Z series, which presumably serves machines with a second three-phase winding set fed by its own inverter bridge; which vehicles use it is not published, and no manufacturer documents P0ED4. Low and high cases are P0ED5 and P0ED6. Ford explains the role of its U-V-W codes on its 2019 power-split hybrids: the inverter is checked for overcurrent, current sensor and current regulation faults, and generator problems of this kind are stored as P0A6F, P0A72, P0A75 or their high variants. CARB requires electric drive components to be monitored. A faulty phase current limits generator output, engine start and charging.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the battery warning light comes on, you could get stranded. Turn off electrical accessories and go straight to a repair shop.
Symptoms
- Hybrid system warning and MIL
- Reduced charging, engine may start less smoothly
Most likely causes
- Fault in the inverter bridge or current regulation for phase X
- Phase X current sensor out of tolerance
- Loose or damaged high-voltage connection of phase X
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0ED4 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- E: Subsystem depends on the code range
- D4: Specific fault in that system
