P22D5: Turbocharger Turbine Inlet Valve Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

P22D5 is a plausibility fault of the turbine inlet valve position signal. The voltage stays inside its electrical limits, yet it does not match what the module expects, for instance the reading lags the commanded position, fails to reach the learned end stops or does not change when the valve is moved. CARB requires input sensors of this kind to be checked for rationality as well as for circuit faults. Since a GM patent describes the valve being run in position control with sensor feedback, a wrong but believable reading directly corrupts the valve setting and thus boost. Causes include a sensor drifting with heat, a slipped magnet or linkage, and a valve that moves sluggishly so that position and command diverge. No manufacturer publicly documents P22D5.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive without demanding power and go to a repair shop soon. If you see a lot of blue smoke or hear a metallic noise, shut off the engine.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Jerky or delayed changeover between turbo stages
  • Boost fluctuates under steady throttle

Most likely causes

  • Valve or linkage sluggish from soot, so position lags the command
  • Position sensor drifting or misaligned on the actuator
  • End positions not relearned after actuator replacement

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P22D5 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 2: Fuel injection
  • D5: Specific fault in that system

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with code P22D5?

Drive without demanding power and go to a repair shop soon. If you see a lot of blue smoke or hear a metallic noise, shut off the engine.

What causes code P22D5?

The most common causes are: valve or linkage sluggish from soot, so position lags the command; position sensor drifting or misaligned on the actuator; end positions not relearned after actuator replacement.
