P232C: Cylinder 11 Fuel Injector A Offset Learning At Max Limit

P232C is the upper-limit partner of P232B for injector A in cylinder 11. The small-quantity learning has found that this injector needs far more energizing time than the nominal map to produce the expected torque pulse, and the stored correction has hit its maximum at one or more rail pressure levels. Typical reasons are coking, wear or a sticking needle, so the injector delivers too little or opens late. GM's 2018 diesel tables describe the logic for cylinders 1 to 8: every new learned value is checked, the saturation status is kept per pressure level in non-volatile memory, the code sets if any level is saturated, and it is Type B (MIL after two trips). CARB requires such a fault when a fuel feedback has run out of authority. Only twelve-cylinder diesels have a cylinder 11; no maker publishes P232C.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and go to a repair shop. If you smell fuel or the engine is shaking badly, do not keep driving.

Cylinder 11 is numbered according to the manufacturer: check your engine's manual before working on it.

Symptoms

  • MIL on after two trips
  • Rough idle or uneven running at low load
  • Possibly harder starting or more smoke

Most likely causes

  • Injector of cylinder 11 coked, worn or sticking (delivers too little)
  • Injector correction code missing or wrong after replacement
  • Poor fuel quality or contamination promoting deposits
  • Disturbed crankshaft speed signal

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P232C means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 3: Ignition and misfires
  • 2C: Specific fault in that system
