Diesel exhaust lines often carry three or four temperature probes in a row, ahead of the oxidation catalyst, the particulate filter and the SCR catalyst. P24C2 says that on bank 1 the readings of these probes no longer agree with each other, without pinning the error on one of them. Ford's 2023 diesel summary uses it in its EGT plausibility check: after a soak of at least six hours with the engine stopped, all probes should read alike at key-on (limit 50 °C), and during the following 200 to 400 s each probe is compared with a model (±80 °C), with a fault having to persist for 20 s. Ram lists the code in bulletin 18-028-14 for the 2014 Ram 1500 with the 3.0 L diesel, cured by new PCM software. Single-probe faults are P2080, P2084, P242B and P246F. Filter regeneration may be held back.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the light is on steadily, take a highway drive or go to a repair shop soon. If the car is in limp mode or the light is flashing, do not push the engine.
Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1. Inline engines only have this bank.
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp on
- Particulate filter regeneration suppressed or aborted
- Often no noticeable change in driving behaviour
Most likely causes
- One exhaust temperature probe has drifted with age and reads too high or too low
- Corroded or heat-damaged connector adding resistance to one probe signal
- Engine control software with too tight correlation limits (update available on some models)
- Probes swapped between mounting positions after a repair
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P24C2 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 2: Generic code: same on every make
- 4: Emissions
- C2: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with code P24C2?
If the light is on steadily, take a highway drive or go to a repair shop soon. If the car is in limp mode or the light is flashing, do not push the engine.
What causes code P24C2?
The most common causes are: one exhaust temperature probe has drifted with age and reads too high or too low; corroded or heat-damaged connector adding resistance to one probe signal; engine control software with too tight correlation limits (update available on some models).
