P24C3: Exhaust Gas Temperature Measurement System - Multiple Sensor Correlation Bank 2

P24C3 is the bank 2 counterpart of P24C2 and only makes sense on engines whose two cylinder banks feed separate exhaust strings, each with its own set of temperature probes. The controller has found that the probes of the second string disagree among themselves beyond what the operating state allows. No manufacturer documents P24C3 publicly. Ford's 2023 diesel summary shows how such a group check works for bank 1: a key-on comparison after a long soak and a model comparison while driving, each probe weighed against the others. CARB requires that temperature sensors used for aftertreatment control be checked for rationality. The individual bank 2 probes have their own codes P2082, P2086, P2467 and P2474. A test with all probes cold after an overnight stop usually shows the outlier.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the light is on steadily, take a highway drive or go to a repair shop soon. If the car is in limp mode or the light is flashing, do not push the engine.

Bank 2 is the side without cylinder 1, so it only exists on V or boxer engines.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp on
  • Particulate filter regeneration may be inhibited

Most likely causes

  • One bank 2 temperature probe has drifted and no longer matches the others
  • Contact resistance in a bank 2 probe connector or harness
  • Exhaust leak near one probe cooling its tip

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P24C3 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 4: Emissions
  • C3: Specific fault in that system
