P2586: Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor B Circuit

P2586 covers a general electrical fault at position sensor B, which reports where the second boost control actuator stands - the vane mechanism or electric wastegate of a second turbocharger on engines that regulate two of them separately. The engine computer cannot use the feedback, without the fault being pinned down as low (P2588), high (P2589) or sporadic (P2590); P2587 is a position mismatch with a working circuit. No manufacturer documents P2586 publicly. CARB requires the sensors of the boost control system to be monitored as comprehensive components. For sensor A, Kia service action SA078 on the 2011 Optima 2.0 T-GDI pairs the circuit code P2562 with an electric wastegate actuator whose rod length must be reset. Boost is usually limited.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive without demanding power and go to a repair shop soon. If you see a lot of blue smoke or hear a metallic noise, shut off the engine.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp on
  • Reduced power because boost is capped
  • No valid position value for actuator B in live data

Most likely causes

  • Connector or terminal fault at the actuator B position sensor
  • Harness to actuator B damaged by exhaust heat
  • Position sensor inside actuator B failed (often replaced as a unit)

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2586 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 5: Speed and idle
  • 86: Specific fault in that system
