P2624: Injector Control Pressure Regulator Circuit Low

P2624 is reserved for a control circuit of the injection pressure regulator that sits too low, typically a ground short on the line switched by the PCM. No manufacturer documents this code publicly. On the 6.0 L Power Stroke, the best-known HEUI application, Ford reports every open or short of the IPR driver under P2623 alone, according to its OBD summaries up to 2009; International's HEUI engines like the DT466 use their own heavy-duty fault codes. CARB requires engines whose injection pressure is built hydraulically to have that pressure control monitored like a fuel system. A grounded IPR output can leave the valve permanently energised, so oil rail pressure may run high or the module shuts the output down. P2623 is the open circuit, P2625 the high fault.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and go to a repair shop. If you smell fuel or the engine is shaking badly, do not keep driving.

Symptoms

  • Hard start or no-start
  • Rough running, knocking or erratic power
  • Malfunction indicator lamp on

Most likely causes

  • IPR control wire chafed to ground near the valley or pump cover
  • Internally shorted IPR coil
  • Damaged driver stage in the PCM

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2624 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 6: Control modules and outputs
  • 24: Specific fault in that system
