P2766: Input/Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor B Circuit Range/Performance

P2766 marks a sensor B signal that is present but erratic or implausible. Ford's 2012 strategy applies it to the DPS6 dual-clutch box, where sensor B reads input shaft 2. In Mitsubishi's 2022 CVT, sensor B is in fact the secondary pulley sensor on the output side: with the converter locked and engine, primary pulley and input speeds within 1,000 rpm of one another, a pulley ratio above 2.9 or below 0.3 for 5 s sets the code, two trips, MIL on. Infiniti bulletin ITB20-027 for the 2019 QX50 CVT covers a permanent P2766, among other transmission codes, that will not clear after the prescribed procedure; the fix is a new TCM. Erratic signals point to a dirty sensor, interference, or a loose fit.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive gently to a repair shop. If it slips, you hear clunks, or it loses its gears, do not keep driving.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light after two drives
  • Sluggish acceleration, manual mode unavailable
  • Torque converter lock-up disabled

Most likely causes

  • Sensor B fouled with metal debris or not seated firmly
  • Interference or poor ground on the signal circuit
  • TCM fault keeping the code stored permanently

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2766 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 7: Transmission
  • 66: Specific fault in that system
