P0D80: Battery Charger Input Circuit/Open

P0D80 means the on-board charger sees no usable AC supply at its input even though the charging handshake says power should be there. Ford documents the check for its plug-in hybrids in the OBD summaries for model years 2014 to 2018: with the cable connected, the EVSE active and the S2 switch closed, an input below 85 VAC lasting 30 seconds sets the code, and Ford's code dictionary marks it as a MIL code. The fault can therefore lie outside the car, for example a dead EVSE or a tripped breaker, as well as in the charge inlet, the AC harness or the charger itself. P0D81 to P0D84 cover implausible or electrically wrong input signals, P0D27 a supply that is present but too low. The driver notices that the car does not charge.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Vehicle does not charge although the cable is plugged in
  • Charging fault message or flashing fault pattern at the charge port
  • Check engine light

Most likely causes

  • Charging station or outlet delivers no AC after the handshake (fault, tripped breaker)
  • Open AC contact or wire between charge inlet and charger
  • Fault in the charger's input stage or voltage measurement

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium

What each character of P0D80 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • D: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 80: Specific fault in that system
