P0DF8: Generator Inverter Temperature Sensor C Circuit Low

P0DF8 tells that temperature sensor C in the generator inverter delivers a voltage below its valid range. Mitsubishi uses the code in the Outlander PHEV for the W-phase high-side IGBT sensor: a reading at or under 1.25 V for 0.08 s, with at least 8 V GCU supply, stores P0DF8-00, and the check runs all the time. Physical causes are a short between signal and ground or a breakdown inside the module, for instance after coolant has reached the electronics. The value suggests a far too hot switch, so the controller derates the generator to stay on the safe side. The sensor cannot be replaced on its own, which is why Mitsubishi lists the power drive unit. The same fault on sensor B is P0DF5, the high case on this sensor P0DF9.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Hybrid or engine warning light on
  • Generator power limited
  • Implausibly high inverter temperature in live data

Most likely causes

  • Signal line of sensor C shorted to ground
  • Shorted sensor or internal fault of the power drive unit
  • Coolant or moisture inside the inverter electronics

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0DF8 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • D: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • F8: Specific fault in that system
