P0DF9 is stored when the C temperature sensor of the generator inverter reports a voltage at or beyond the upper end of its window. For the Outlander PHEV Mitsubishi defines the limit as 3.75 V for 0.08 s on the W-phase high-side IGBT sensor, monitored continuously whenever the GCU has at least 8 V. An open line, a backed-out terminal in the inverter connector or a broken sensor element are the usual explanations. Unlike a real cold start, the reading does not climb as the generator works, which separates the fault from a true low temperature. Generator power may be held back until the value is valid again, and Mitsubishi fixes it by replacing the complete power drive unit. Too low a voltage on the same sensor is P0DF8; the B-sensor counterpart is P0DF6.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- Engine or hybrid warning light on
- Inverter temperature stuck at a very low value
- Generator output held back
Most likely causes
- Open signal line of sensor C
- Terminal pushed back in the inverter connector
- Broken sensor element inside the power drive unit
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0DF9 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- D: Subsystem depends on the code range
- F9: Specific fault in that system
