P0E23 is the catch-all circuit code of drive motor inverter temperature sensor G, a thermistor that watches the power switches of the motor inverter. It stands for an electrical fault the controller cannot pin down as low, high or erratic. No manufacturer documents P0E23 publicly. The only published user of the G series is Mitsubishi: in the 2023 Outlander PHEV the seventh IGBT sensor of the front motor unit (U-phase H2) reports its faults as P0E24, P0E25 and P0E26, but not as P0E23. CARB requires hybrid input components to be tested for open circuits and out-of-range signals. Without a valid temperature the inverter is usually run with reduced torque; the sensor sits inside the inverter, so repair often means that assembly.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- Hybrid system warning light and MIL on
- Reduced electric drive power
Most likely causes
- Temperature sensor or sensing board inside the inverter failed
- Poor contact at an internal or external inverter connector
- Faulty evaluation input in the motor control unit
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0E23 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- E: Subsystem depends on the code range
- 23: Specific fault in that system
