P0E29: Drive Motor Inverter Temperature Sensor H Circuit Range/Performance

With P0E29 the controller doubts the reading of inverter temperature sensor H although its voltage is valid. On the 2023 Outlander PHEV Mitsubishi uses it for IGBT sensor 8 of the front motor unit, the V-phase H2 position. The cold-start comparison is the same one used for sensors 1 to 7: soak of 600 s or more, IGBTs off, supply at least 8 V, test window of 1.5 s; a difference above 47 °C to either of two reference IGBT temperatures, held for 0.1 s, stores P0E29-00 and lights the MIL and the hybrid warning light. A sensor that is wrong by that much after a cold soak is offset, not overheated. The sibling for the U-phase sensor is P0E24. Mitsubishi verifies it on a test drive before installing a new power drive unit.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • MIL and hybrid warning light on
  • Driving usually unaffected

Most likely causes

  • Sensor H offset against the other IGBT sensors
  • Measuring circuit in the power drive unit faulty
  • Uneven cooling of the inverter

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0E29 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • E: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 29: Specific fault in that system
