P0ED3 is logged once battery F of the hybrid/EV system climbs above its permitted maximum voltage. It is the high member of the F series, next to P0ED2 (low) and P0ED1 (unstable). No manufacturer documents P0ED3 publicly. GM's hybrid tables show how strictly overvoltage is treated at pack level: above 479 V the P0ABD monitor fails within one trip. Ford sets P0AFB when its pack stays above 362.2 V on plug-in or 327.8 V on full hybrids for 10 seconds. Within a single unit an excess voltage usually means its cells were charged further than the rest, for instance because the balancing circuit of that unit quit, or that its measuring channel reads high. Charging and regeneration stay restricted until the cause is found; a warning appears and plug-in charging may be refused.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- Charging refused or regenerative braking weak
- MIL and battery warning
Most likely causes
- Balancing circuit of unit F failed, cells overcharged
- Measuring channel of unit F reading too high
- Charger or regeneration control overshooting
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0ED3 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- E: Subsystem depends on the code range
- D3: Specific fault in that system
