P2718 points to an open control circuit of solenoid D: the coil draws no current because a wire, pin or the winding itself is broken. GM's 2016 eight-speed table runs the open check on the clutch 4 valve and fails it after 0.3 s within a 0.5 s window (one trip); the 2017 and 2018 nine-speed tables use an impedance measurement. In 2018 GM issued service update N182193520 for 8L45 and 8L90 units in Camaro, Colorado, Corvette, Silverado and others because the valve body connector might not be fully seated, setting P2718 or P2720 and forcing limp-home. For the even-clutch shutdown valve of the 2023 Corvette dual-clutch box, it stands for open load, seen while switched off (Type A); Ford's TR9070 also files open load here.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.
Symptoms
- Limp-home mode with limited forward gears
- MIL on immediately
- Harsh engagements
Most likely causes
- Valve body solenoid connector not fully seated (GM 8L45/8L90)
- Broken wire or pushed-out pin in the harness
- Open winding in solenoid D
- TCM output stage fault
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P2718 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 2: Generic code: same on every make
- 7: Transmission
- 18: Specific fault in that system
