P2B1F: Cylinder 8 Injection Pulse Offset Exceeded Learning Limit

P2B1F is the last code of the series: the offset learned for injector 8 has crossed the learning limit. Ford uses it on the 6.7 L V8 Power Stroke. For 2023–2025 F-Super Duty trucks, special service message 53896 links these codes to driving above 762 m; when symptoms are present the minimum fuel mass adaption of all cylinders is reset with FDRS, and if the fault persists, section 303-04 of the workshop manual takes over. The principle behind it is CARB's rule for diesel fuel feedback in (f)(4.2.4)(A)(iii): a fault once the control has used up its adjustment range. A GM patent on small-quantity learning describes the same idea with two codes per cylinder, one for negative and one for positive drift. P2B1E is the not-learned partner.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the car is running normally, drive in moderation to a repair shop. If it loses power or another warning appears, do not continue.

Cylinder 8 is numbered according to the manufacturer: check your engine's manual before working on it.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp on
  • Slightly rough idle in some cases, otherwise normal running

Most likely causes

  • Adaption skewed by high-altitude driving (Ford SSM 53896, reset with FDRS)
  • Injector 8 worn or coked
  • Outdated PCM calibration

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2B1F means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • B: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 1F: Specific fault in that system
