P2B1E: Cylinder 8 Injection Pulse Offset Not Learned

P2B1E means injector 8 has not received a learned pulse offset. As the final cylinder in the group it belongs to V8 engines; Ford's 6.7 L V8 would be the obvious candidate, but Ford publishes only the exceeded-limit code P2B1F for it, so no manufacturer source for P2B1E exists. CARB leaves the time allowed for learning to the manufacturer: per (f)(4.2.4)(A)(i) a fault exists when feedback control has not begun within that interval. Because an eight-cylinder needs one learned set per injector and pressure level, GM patented an extrapolation of values to shorten the learning time. In service the code mostly points to a learn that was reset or never had suitable coasting phases; only if it comes back under good conditions do injector 8, its wiring or the crank signal come into question.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the car is running normally, drive in moderation to a repair shop. If it loses power or another warning appears, do not continue.

Cylinder 8 is numbered according to the manufacturer: check your engine's manual before working on it.

Symptoms

  • Warning lamp
  • Mostly no noticeable change in running

Most likely causes

  • Learn values reset or injector 8 replaced, learn not finished
  • Few coasting phases with fuel cut-off in everyday use
  • Fault in the crank speed signal or the injector 8 wiring

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2B1E means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • B: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 1E: Specific fault in that system
